Use It or Lose It: Navigating the Challenges of Aging
As we add more candles to our birthday cakes, there's an undeniable truth – our aches and pains take longer to come back from. More so, if we don’t work out regularly. It's time to assess what we can tackle effortlessly now and what requires a bit more consideration.
Recently, I had a “moment” at the supermarket. A lovely elder woman, seemingly frail, struggled to lift her groceries, including a hefty bag of cat litter. That's when it hit me – the goals we don't even realise we have until they unfold in everyday scenarios.
One of my unspoken objectives became clear – the ability to carry home a load of groceries, cat litter and all. Sure, we might dream of a future with bots handling the heavy lifting, but until then, let's prepare ourselves.
Clients often unveil their aspirations, and they're surprisingly simple yet profound. One of my dear clients, for instance, said that in 10 years time she still wants to independently get in and out of the bath. These seemingly ordinary tasks demand strength and flexibility, areas that require specific training.
So, what are you willing to relinquish, and what are your non-negotiables? It's a crucial question we should all ask ourselves. Whether it's carrying groceries or mastering the bath exit, these goals, both short and long term, deserve attention.
Let's chat about how we can pave the way for your journey towards a more robust, flexible, and independent future.
